An area of intense pitting visible on 1946 RAF vertical aerial photographs [1], activity appears to commence after May 1942 as this activity is not visible at this location on photographs of this date [2]. The pits probably relate to military training as Canterbury Golf Course and surrounding land appears to have been requisitioned for training use in WWII. A similar area of pitting was also recorded 300m to the north. It is unclear what activity this may represent, but it may derive from practice foxhole digging.

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER []3.
