Peverell’s tower marks the southern extent of King Johns defensive works (1199-1216) and is one in a series of early C13th towers located along the south western curtain wall. On the southern approach to the gateway is protected by a D-shaped tower built in the later onto the eastern side, in a different masonry style and material, with one level of loops and a series of post-medieval flat headed windows above, and a conical roof. (1-2) Rigold reported that the base of the tower had a shaft, and behind it a guard-room with a garderobe controlling the passage east from the gate; the shafts were filled and further alterations made around 1300, at which time the king-post roof may have been inserted The lower door on the east side leads into a short passage ending in a large stone-lined shaft/pit.
