TR 1457: Canterbury, a city with its origins in, and a history of continuous occupation from, the Roman DUROVERNUM CANTIACORUM (TR 15 NW 1). Many of its major mediaeval components survive, notably, the Cathedral Priory [TR 15 NE 125], St Augustine's Abbey [TR 15 NE 124], the Castle[TR 15 NW 63] and the City Wall [TR 15 NW 116] which follows exactly the course of the Roman wall and in many places incorporates its core.(1) Additional bibliography. (2-13) Canterbury is mentioned in 1086 as a city in which the king had Sake and Soke over 212 burgesses and rent from 51 others. From 1294 onwards canterbury was taxed as a city. (14)
