Monument details

HER Number:MWX43353
Type of record:Monument
Name:WWII bomb craters south of Boxlees Hill, Minster Marshes

Summary

Two small bomb-craters are visible in the field between the sewage works at Boxlees Hill and the River Stour on 1940s aerial photographs. It is probable that these derive from a WWII bombing raid as a dense concentration of similar features are visible 100m to the east on the same photographs. Examination of modern aerial photographs indicates that they have been infilled and levelled.

Two small bomb-craters are visible in the field between the sewage works at Boxlees Hill and the River Stour on 1940s RAF vertical aerial photographs [1]. The southernmost measures 5m in diameter and the northernmost 4m in diameter. It is probable that these derive from a WWII bombing raid as a dense concentration of similar features are visible 100m to the east on the same photographs (MWX43354, MWX43355). Examination of modern aerial photographs indicates that they have been infilled and levelled [2].

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [3].
