Wringer House, excavated in 2013 in advance ofdevelopment of the northern site of Leigh Gunpowder Mills. From the report:
"Parts of another building based on concrete strip foundations was recorded in Area 4. This matches with the ‘Wringer’ House, depicted on the interpretive map (Rowley 2009). The Wringer House would probably have been part of the nitration process. At the Indiana site in America, in order to obtain a propellant with uniform ballistic characteristic, slurry from nitrogen poaching tubs in the Poaching House were blended with nitrocellulose and passed into collecting boxes. The boxes were then emptied into tubs where guncotton and nitroglycerine were blended with nitrocellulose (Abandoned 2015). At the Wringer House, the large amount of water that were used throughout the process to suspend the nitrocellulose was removed with machinery resembling mangles. Due to demolition and removal of floors and plant, the function of the building could not be proved from the archaeological remains." (1)
