A significant collection of medieval and post-medieval pottery from a blocked-off garderobe at Dover Castle. The finds were excavated in a series of12 inch spits. Towards the middle of the seventeenth century, perhaps during the Civil War, this garderobe shaft was partly filled in and blocked off as a result of some general tidying up in the castle. Medieval sherds include local Tyler Hill type coarseware pots and jugs while the post medieval finds include Dutch and English tin-glazed earthenwares; Imported unglazed earthenwares and stonewares; Fine Surrey earthenwares and slip-decorated bowls from north Holland; Slip decorated lead-glazed earthenwares and coarse English lead-glazedearthenwares. A group of clay tobacco pipes C1610-60 and trivets were also found. The collection is seventeenth century in date. (1-3)
