[TQ 70147511 `A'] "About 150 yards west of the northern end of Higham Common causeway and south of the sea wall whilst cutting a trench for clay, a wide band of peat, whose top lay some 3' below the level of the marsh, was observed in May 1953. Sherds of coarse ware, one fragment of Samian, and brick and tile pieces were obtained from the peat and the stratum immediately above it. Considerable quantities of such remains had been turned up by the workman on the site, including the rim of a large mortarium. Water - logged conditions precluded proper examination but a Roman occupation site associated with the upper (Roman) peat bed was indicated."(1). Masses of 2nd cent. pottery found in repairing the sea wall. Also ? hut floors (2). These finds came from throughout the length of the trench commencing at Higham Common causeway. I was with Mr. A.F. Allan at the time (3) . This area is under pasture with no surface evidence of occupation (4). Additional index entries and references from relevant field reports (5-13). For site in context with others in inter-tidal zone, see (14).. though tide is rising very rapidly.
