Excavations by the Gravesend Historical Society at the site of Springhead Nurseries, Southfleet in 1991/2 discovered the remains of a Roman road running north-west to south-east. A number of trenches located the path of the road, which was c. 10m wide. (1)

The metalled road, in approximate N-S alignment towards the western side of the trench, and a 2m wide ditch, in NE-SW alignment towards the eastern side. Both were cut through a buried soil which appeared to have accumulated in the lower-lying terrain to the east but was not observed beyond an area c. 1m west of the western road edge. Several metal objects, probably also of Roman date, were recovered from this deposits and from the road surface by metal detector. Ceramic building material (CBM) fragments were observed within the deposit but not recovered. (2)

The road continues north from Springhead and is visible as a cropmark in aerial photographs of 1990. It is not known where the road continued to.
