[Area centred TQ 62486022] "Golden Nob: White flint flakes very numerous. Possibly a late Palaeolithic or Neolithic rock shelter settlement. (a) There are earthworks here (in grounds of a house called 'Treetops') (Visited 16.9.1928)." [The place-name Golden Nob appears to have been incorrectly identified by Auth. It is published just south of this area, at TQ 62315994, on Kent 30 SW, Edn. of 1936.] (1) Included in list of areas on which more complete information remains unpublished in Harrison's MSS. (2) 'Golden Nob' is a small knoll of chalk standing out from the face of the North Downs. On the neck which joins it to the hill slope is a small circular depression; result of quarrying? Round the east side descending to the vale is a footpath in a narrow holloway appearing at first sight like a ditch around the side of a small motte. However the whole feature is entirely natural and no artificial earthworks were observed. The ground is pasture covered with little evidence of flint, and the flint flakes were more likely found in the grounds of 'Treetops'. A perambulation revealed an abundance of flint everywhere along the top of the slopes of the Downs. No rock shelter was seen. The owner stated that E.R. Harrison was a regualr visitor to the house, but knew nothing of 'earthworks' near to 'Treetops'. (For further information re. Harrison's collections - see TQ 65 SW 2) (3) No change. (4)
