Excavations in advance of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in 2002-3 identified a number of Romano-British property boundaries west of the Ebbsfleet. A ditch was uncovered along the northern edge of property 4, likely a boundary ditch separating it from property 5. Only the eastern end of this ditch was uncovered, it consisted of a meandering and rather irregular ditch perhaps created by the digging of a series of shallow intercutting pits. It extended for approximately 12 m, almost entirely within property 4, petered out at the west end and ran into the Ebbsfleet to the east. It was up to 3 m wide and generally no more than 0.5 m deep. The pottery from the fills (which appears to have accumulated gradually) dated to the late 2nd or early 3rd century. (1)
