Summary
Keep Yard 8, located on the south eastern side of the inner bailey, is one of the buildings within the inner bailey that appear as a group of mid-18th-century barrack blocks with a reasonably homogenous character. Keep Yard 8, located on the south eastern side of the inner bailey, is one of the buildings within the inner bailey that appear as a group of mid-18th-century barrack blocks with a reasonably homogenous character. It is likely however that this building originated in the C14th century as an Armoury on the southern side of the Inner Bailey. The buildings is built over an apparently medieval cellar, or possibly a cistern, approached by external stairs covered by a timber flap.(1-2)
The irregular rubble in the western gable end and the main façade of Building 8 appears to
be medieval in origin. In 1372-5 and 1426-37 there are references to ‘The House of Arms or the King’s Artillery House’. (2-3) No location is obvious but in c 1570 Bereblock shows the ‘Old Armoury’ on the southern side of the Inner Bailey, on the site of the current Keep Yard 8 building. (4)
