Admiralty Naval Radar Station, which is located at the far south eastern end of the Castle complex, below the southern end of the eastern ramparts, was constructed in c.1941 in order to monitor enemy shipping. The surviving radar station is an empty hexagonal plan building accessed from above and below by concrete steps.
It is a utilitarian structure constructed from stretcher bond red brick walls and with a flat reinforced concrete roof supported by concrete beams. Internally the walls are of bare brick and with few features. The hastily erected nature of the building and lack of concern for aesthetics is shown at the corners of the structure where overlapping standard rectangular bricks are used rather than special ones designed for obtuse corners.
