The Royal Garrison Artillery Barracks, also known as Stone Hut 1, which is located just inside the western curtain wall of the Castle, just to the north of Cannons Gate, was constructed in 1912 to house the gunners of the Royal Garrison Artillery which had been established as a group in 1899 with the specific purpose of manning coast batteries.

The Barracks are two storeys and constructed of rough stone with ashlar quoins and dressings. The building comprised dormitories in the parallel arms, with sanitary facilities and NCO room in the central section and the building could house 85 men in total. Both the interior and exterior of the building are relatively unchanged and today the building is used for offices and storage. Summarised from sources (1-2)
