The Saluting platform, which is positioned above the Long Gun Magazine , towards the southern end of the Castle complex with a commanding view of the harbour, was constructed in the early 20th century. It consists of a relatively flat grassy area, with some features including a 19th-century brick chimney, which originates from the generator room of the Long Gun Magazine situated directly below. There are four concrete bases for gun emplacements to the south-eastern part of the platform, and these are angled towards the south west. The bases were surrounded by a low brick wall, most of which remains in situ. As well as the 19th-century chimney stack there are three small vents which have concrete covers and a larger vent which serves the kitchen in the ‘Annexe’ level within the wartime tunnels.
