There are two areas of terraced ground on the northern (rear) side of the Officers new barracks, today these are occuped by a modern visitor car park. These terraces were orignally constructed at the same time as the officers new barracks as part of a generous scheme of expansion and modernisation undertaken within the castle during and after the Crimean War (1853-1856).the buildings included further barracks, ranges of stables, a coach house and other associated garrison buildings, and associated roadways. (1-2) These were all demolished in the 1960’s and 1970’s though their position is visible on the 1957 1:1250 Ordnance Survey of Dover. (3)
