In the south barbican, between the tower of the Palace Gate and the central tower, and accessible by breaches in both of the towers, was the site of the governor’s stables. It is shown on the early 18th century plans but not on earlier plans suggesting it is of an early 18th century date. It was evidently demolished in the later 18th century and in the 19th century a new ‘out-building’ was erected in its place, which has also now been demolished. (1)
