The gunpowder magazine was constructed in c.1800 close to the 13th century Rokesley’s tower, near Cannons Gate on the south western side of the castle. The Magazine is constructed of London stock bricks withThe southern side of the magazine covered by a large earthen bank in order to protect the explosives from potential gunfire from warships, it was originally designed to contain 320 barrels of explosives. The earliest depiction of the magazine is in an early-19th century plan of the castle which clearly shows the original rectangular form surrounded by earth banking. Summarised from sources (1-2)
