During restoration work undertaken at Hurst's Tower along the outer curtain wall at Dover Castle a number of wall footings were uncovered which relate to the site of two former (possible medieval) buildings located to the rear of the tower. Parts of the main tower which are of a Napolionic date ran over a narrower rubble wall which probably formed the ground wall of a timber frame and against this was a small oven, buried in a thicker wall, but adjoining a fireplace of late Medieval type. Excavation of the area to behind the tower showed two phases of narrow footings, only 45-55cm wide as befitting ground walls for timber. Within the mortar of one of these walls was a jetton dated 1300. The building represented by these chalk footings lay parallel with the curtain. (1)
