The works of 1967 involved the removal of much of the upper filling between the retaining walls of the Constables Gate Barbican for the insertions of reinforced binders. A small southern gate to the barbican was uncovered. The undefended south gate was clearly C19th in date and the footing of its immediate predecessor did not suggest anything much stronger. It lay only 1.1m lower and was apparently cut into the filling that had buried the earlier north entrance, and itself perhaps only of Napoleonic date. (1)
