During an archaeological excavation undertaken within the inner bailey at Dover Castle, associated with the laying of new utilities, a demolition layer was uncovered representing the former site of a building in the north eastern corner of the inner bailey (the building currently standing in this locatiojn is of a C18th date. The footings were also present within all three of trenches excavated in this area. These were of chalk but was thick enough to have been masonry at least up to the first floor. They lie almost directly over the chalk surface which was laid shortly after the completion of the Keep and the Curtain. The footings are early but cannot be dated exactly (any time under King John or Henry II seems plausible). They appear to represent a transverse wing extending 9.5m from the curtain. There are traces of a lime floor located within the wall footings. (1)
