The eastern defences of Dover Castle, facing a higher area of chalk downland, form an important aspect of the castle’s defences and are largely medieval in origin, although greatly altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. The curtain wall between Norfolk Tower and Fitzwilliam gate was constructed in the 1220s as part of a programme to reinforce the northern defences after the 1216 siege. The eastern defences of Dover Castle, facing a higher area of chalk downland, form an important aspect of the castle’s defences and are largely medieval in origin, although greatly altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. The curtain wall between Norfolk Tower and Fitzwilliam gate was constructed in the 1220s as part of a programme to reinforce the northern defences after the 1216 siege. The curtain wall coming east from the Norfolk Towers is sheer, without a batter, and largely ivy covered. (summarised from sources) (1-2)
