Monument details

HER Number:MWX43387
Type of record:Monument
Name:Probable WWII Stop Line, Ebbsfleet to St Augustine's Well

Summary

Freshly constructed banking is visible flanking field drains running between RAF vertical aerial photographs. The banks form a near continuous barrier; east of Ebbsfleet Farm, the drains lie only on the seaward side whereas to its west, banks flank both sides of the drains. The barrier is also extended southwards from Ebbsfleet Farm to the coast road. The earthworks appear to be derived from fortification of the drains into a barrier forming a stop line during WWII. The banks appear to have been levelled after the war and are not visible on recent aerial photographs of the area. This is a segment of a stop line running between Cliffs End & Minster, further parts of it are recorded to the west as MWX43372.

Freshly constructed banking is visible flanking field drains running between Weatherlees Hill, Ebbsfleet and St. Augustine's Well on early 1940s RAF vertical aerial photographs [1-2]. The banks form a near continuous barrier; east of Ebbsfleet Farm, the banks lie only on the south, seaward, side of the drain whereas to its west, banks flank both sides of the drains. The barrier is also extended southwards from Ebbsfleet Farm along existing field drains to the coast road south of Ebbsfleet House. These appear to be derived from fortification of the drains into a barrier forming a stop line during WWII. The banks appear to have been levelled after the war and are not visible on recent aerial photographs of the area [3].

This is a segment of a stop line running between Cliffs End & Minster, further parts of it are recorded to the west as MWX43372.

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [4].
