During evaluation work on a section of the Channel Tunnel Rail-link, in an area around grid reference TQ 61607410 palaeolithic flints and cores were found. These were a Mousterian core, a frost damaged Mousterian/Levalloisian core and two large flakes. This area has produced palaeolithic items found in 1992 and 1996. See (TQ 67 SW 61).(1-3)
Further middle palaeolithic (Levalloisian) artefacts were discovered during evlauation work in 2001. The finds were mainly concerntrated arourd the southern edge of the site (centred TQ61467411) The finds, including flakes, a blade and probable cores, had only been moved a short distance by colluvial/solifluction process (gradual movement over time down the valley). There is potential for the recovery of undisturbed horizons with the deposits in this area.(4)
