Summary

A possible Twentieth Century pontoon is visible on vertical aerial photographs of 1941 in shallow water on the beach to the east of the Coastguard Lookout at the Dengemarsh Gut Shafts. It was no longer visible at this location by the time of the next available vertical aerial photograph of 1946. This feature has been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the South East RCZAS NMP project.

25-FEB-1947 Position 50 54 36N 000 56 42E.

21-OCT-1959 Area surveyed without positive results, a visual

examination was made at LW and bottom sweeps carried out. Nothing

located.

09-APR-1975 Not found, no close search. General sea bed depth by

echosounder 1m.

The beached remains of what appears to be a simple rectangular pontoon are centred at TR 0685 1659. It lies 335m to the south-east of the Coastguard Lookout at the Dengmarsh Gut Shafts. It measures approximately six metres by nine metres in size. The pontoon is most clearly visible on oblique aerial photographs of 1941. By the time of the next available vertical aerial photographs of 1946, the possible pontoon was no longer visible at this location.
