The possible bomb crater is centred at TR 0854 1843, approximately 220m to the WSW of the Coastguard Cottages between Lydd and Dungeness. It measures approximately 12m in diameter, and is perfectly circular in plan view. It is surrounded at its rim by a narrow bank. It is thought that the loose nature of the shingle characteristic of the ground in this area would have resulted in a small upcast bank around the edge of the site of the explosion. It is in close proximity to military buildings and barbed wire defences of this period (Monument Numbers 1533409, 1533410), which may have been the intended targets. It is not visible in any form on the next available vertical aerial photographs of 1962 (1-2).
