Summary

A Second World War reinforced concrete pillbox shown on a German map of defences in East Kent, at the east end of the Royal military canal, west of Sandgate. The pillbox was also visible on historical aerial photographs taken during the war, but has now been demolished.

Pillbox [shown on German map of defences in East Kent]. Pillbox, which was close to the sea end of the canal. 'Many years ago' the canal wall at this point was rebuilt and the pillbox was destroyed, but the concrete rubble was left where it can be seen today amongst heavy undergrowth.

The Type 24 pillbox referred to above (Source 1) was visible on aerial photographs taken in 1942 and mapped as part of the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey NMP. The pillbox is located at the east of the canal at TR 18741 34927. (2)
