The earthwork remains of four probable WWII gun pits, lying immediately to the south of Richborough Roman fort, are visible on 1940s RAF vertical aerial photography [1]. A fifth gun pit was also noted in the vicinity, but had already been recorded separately as TR 36 SW 50, see Related Monuments. All features appear to have since been plough-levelled and are no longer visible on recent aerial photographs [2]. These are one of several WWII defensive features recorded around Richborough fort, see Related Monuments.
The earthworks were mapped at 1:2500 scale from these aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Richborough Environs Project. The transcriptions produced by this project were added to those produced by the South East Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment (2009-10), see Associated Events. The resulting transcriptions exist as a GIS layer held by this HER [3].
