Second World War public air raid shelter located at Joss Bay, mapped from an aerial photograph taken in May 1942 [1]. The shelter is first visible on photographs taken in January 1941 and is still apparent up to August 1947 [3]. A raised bank is still evident on photographs taken in 1979 and 1980, although its function as an air raid shelter would no longer be necessary. Aerial photographs from 2001, accessible from the Channel Coastal Observatory, shows that the area has been relandscaped and is flattened into a garden lawn [2].

From the air, the air raid shelter appears as an oblong bank of earth approximately 19.5m long and 9m wide, running north-east to south-west. The shelter has two entrances, one on the nw facing edge and another on the sw facing edge.

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photography exists within a GIS layer held by this HER [4].
