Phoenix Mill, established by Matthias Wilks in 1796 as a seed crushing and cake manufacturing plant. Burnt down in 1852 but rebuilt as a paper mill although C. Edney & Co. operated a seed milling business at the mill until 1859.(1) The Riverside Paper Mills were subsequitly built adjacent and Phoenix Mill became a chemical works. The site is situated on the west bank of Dartford Creek at Phoenix Wharf. The site has now been built upon by modern industrial buildings. Additional site photographs (2-7).
