Monument details

HER Number:TQ 96 NE 1003
Type of record:Monument
Name:Oyster fishery in Conyer Creek

Summary

A small oyster fishery belonging to the Manor of Teynham and operating out of Conyer Creek was referred to in a document of 1789. Although it is not mentioned in earlier manorial documents it is possible that it existed during the middle ages when the Manor formed part of the possessions of the See of Canterbury. The extent of the fishery is not known, but Admiralty charts show oyster beds at the east end of Fowley Island and opposite on the mainland in the nineteenth century. By 2005 no remains were visible, suggesting that the fishery had long been abandoned.
