(Summarised from publication)

During excavations undertaken in Dover town centre by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit, a Roman military bath house was excavated and recorded. A rectangular structure was located in the north east corner of the courtyard area associated with the bath house, it was not fully excavated but it has been provisionally interpreted as a water tank.

The structure had been cut deep (1.55m) into the underlying natural deposits, it had vertical walls and a flat base, the minimum internal dimensions were 3.3m (N-S) by 5.74m (E-W) The walls were constructed of flints set in a hard white mortar with small pebbles, they were generally 44-48cm in thickness and survived largely intact on the north and east sides but had been robbed on the west and lay beyond the limits of excavation to the south. The structure had been filled with dumped soils and it was sealed by period two features thus dating it to the first period of the bath houses development. Two walls of unknown function were located near the north wall of this tank, these also date to the first period of development but are later than the original tank (1)
