An Archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit in 1999 ahead of the development of a site off Limekiln Street, into a workshop and welfare facility. The site is a triangular plot situated between the Dover-Folkestone-London railway line, to the north, the Dover south service station to the south and the high brick retaining wall (abutting the cliff face) to the west. During the works the top of a large cylindrical iron tank measuring a minimum of 3m in length E-W by a minimum of 0.8m wide and a minimum of 1m high. This was encased by a heavy concrete brick wall on its south side and a brick wall on the west side. The purpose of the tank is unclear, various service pipes, sometimes laid in culverts, were also seen to cross the site and they are both likely to be associated with the management of water from the wells also located on the site.
