During a number of investigations on war damaged sites in Dover in 1951-1952 a sherd of buff coloured Amphorae was uncovered near the Unitarian Church at the junction of Adrian Street with Last Lane. The surface of the vessel contains graffito which reads LLISTI (ES). It is probably from a globular south Spanish vessel which could have been imported at any time in the first two centuries AD - probably the first half of the second century. Since the graffiti was scratched before firing it almost certainly indicates the producer of the vessel's contents i.e CALLISTVS. His stamps have been found at Rome, Corbridge, south Spain and Saalburg. Find is now in Dover Museum. (1)
