Extensive Roman levels of the first and second centuries AD were uncovered during excavations on a site to the west of Market Square in 1955. The Roman features uncovered included: three Roman walls of chalk blocks set in clay, one of which is associated with a narrow drain or flu on the eastern side, all are associated with sherds of Roman pottery including Samian ware, and appear to date to the later first century AD; a massive Roman foundation of chalk blocks set in a silty chalky clay, this seems to date to the Trajanic - Hadrianic period or later and was associated with samian ware and laminated Roman levels (identified in section) which are probably exterior surfaces, there however were not dated.
