Rescue excavations were carried out by Kent Archaeological rescue unit between the 29th of December 1967 and the first of January 1968 at St Edmunds Church ahead of the restoration of the church which included laying a new floor. An examination of the foundations confirmed what was suspected by looking at the windows of the chapel, that the eastern wall was earlier. Both the east and north walls were found to rest on foundations of crushed chalk 0.96m deep and about 1.2m wide. These extended beyond the walls of the church and appear to have formed part of an earlier building, probably of 12th century date. (1)
