From the source:

"Trenches dug between Adrian Street and Snargate Street in 1949 showed Roman walls and floors associated with pottery dating to the late 1st - early 2nd century. Later excavations in 1955 cut a section through the Roman levels. To the east of this section a Roman room with a opus siginum floor and plaster faced tufa and chalk block walls was located. There appears to have been a narrow passage or corridor outside this room to the west, the other wall of which has been destroyed by a recent sump. Beyond that is a large room with plastered floor and a plaster faced chalk wall, the floor was covered in a layer of black ash. All of these structures were built on puddled chalk over flints perhaps representing earlier buildings or a rammed chalk surface or quay at the sea edge."(1)
