Summary

This is the site of the (now demolished) engine house housing the engine for the Patent Slipway. The original structure was demolished at some point after WWII (location accurate to the nearest 2m based on available information).

The original building, with its tall circular chimney, which housed the winding engine for the slipway, was demolished sometime after the last war. As shown on the 1861 O.S map this structure measured 9.35m by 8m. Harbour board plan No. 4445 fairly certainly shows the original lay out of the building with three similar sized rectangular rooms side by side containing the purchase house, engine house and boiler house. The purchase house was placed across the centre line of the slipway with the other two rooms lying to the south-east. The detached chimney at the east corner of the building lay to the rear of the boiler house was placed across the centre line of the slipway with the other two rooms lying to the south-east. The original winding engine installed was a small, eight horse-power, machine supplied by Mortons of Edinburgh. It seems likely that this was later replaced by a larger engine. The 19th century building was eventually replaced by a small modern flat roofed timber building containing a more up to date winching engine. This building was about 6m square but was dismantled in the summer of 1996. (summarised from source) (1)
