This feature is recorded in the English Heritage Historic Area Assessment for Cooling Parish, Hoo Peninsula. The report states: "Human occupation in Cooling dates back to at least the Romano-British period. A probable settlement to the south of Spendiff has been identified, situated on the northern slopes of the ridge of high ground." (1)

The pastscape website (Historic England) accessed 26-5-2016 states the following regarding this site: "A probable settlement of Iron Age or Roman date, comprising compact rectilinear enclosures and larger enclosures or fields, located on the lower northern slopes of Deangate Ridge overlooking Cooling. A ditched trackway runs west to east along the lower part of the slope, with the smaller contiguous and overlapping enclosures concentrated on its south side and larger enclosures or fields on both sides. A second ditched trackway, running from the higher ground in the south towards the marshes in the north, crosses the west to east trackway. The whole complex covers an area of about 29 hectares. It is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and has been mapped as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. ". Its location is recorded as at TQ 75190 74261. (2)
