Two Palaeolithic handaxes from gravel pit on Dartford Heath. Found on separate occasions in 1879 and at least 8 years previously. An ovate handaxe was found by Spurrell half a mile south of Crayford station and near Dartford Heath (1,2,3). The implement was 'in situ' eight feet below ground in Thames gravel. Now in the British Museum. [See AO/59/204/8 (5)] . A second handaxe was found in 1879 (1, 2, 4).
