Summary

According to Urry the name Wincheap, possibly an ancient wine-market, can be taken back to the beginning of the 13th century. The earliest instance given by Wallenberg (Kent Place Names) is of 1226, he suggests an origin 'wain-market' (waegn + ceap). Brent states 'there was a market at Wincheap where wine was sold'.

According to Urry the name Wincheap, possibly an ancient wine-market, can be taken back to the beginning of the 13th century. The earliest instance given by Wallenberg (Kent Place Names) is of 1226, he suggests an origin 'wain-market' (waegn + ceap). Brent states 'there was a market at Wincheap where wine was sold'. Wine market stone market cross once stood on Wincheap Green called 'Barnacle Cross'.
