In 1972 Frank Jenkins and the Canterbury Archaeological Society excavated a segmented trial trench to the south of St Pancras Church, St Augustine's Abbey on behalf of the Department of the Environment. The trench was coded I, A-H and the site code was SA72.

The site selected for excavation was between the large flat topped mound at the east end of the area and the south wall of the nave of the church of St Pancras. Here a complete cross-secton of the area was obtained including that of the Roman road which is now known to pass through the site on its way from Richboough to enter the city at the Burgate.

The remains of foundations of a structure were also found, possibly a ruinous Roman building, parts of which were used in the construction of the church.
