In 1978 the first of a series of excavations was undertaken by the Canterbury Archaeological Trust in advance of the redevelopment of the Marlowe Car Park and the site of the Marlowe Theatre. The first excavation was initally coded 16WS and later recoded MI. Excavation was total and lasted six months.

The earliest features on the site were a possible well, a ditch and some clay extraction pits dating to the turn of the millenium to c. 100/110 AD. There was also two scatters of stake holes although very little evidence for occupation of any sort was seen for this period apart from a single post-hole seen in the bottom of the ditch. A loam topsoil overlay the natural brickearth and it is likely that this area was open ground until the beginning of the second century AD.

The well (1318) was half sectioned to some 1m in depth.
