A rectangular shaped building set on a long E-W axis was added to the north end of the former Abbot's Guest Hall as part of the Royal Palace created within the former St. Augustine's Abbey by Henry VIII in 1539-40. The King took over the Abbot's Lodging, Great Hall, Chapel etc as his own accommodation and this additional structure was built as the King's 'Wardrobe over the Stair'. Records dated 1552 reveal that repairs were being carried out to the Great hall and great chamber called the 'wardrobe chamber'. All of these buildings were demolished in c. 1845.
