After the great fire of 1543 which may have started in the Great Kitchen and destroyed the building, the site was cleared. Subsequent to the fire, between 1560 and 1563 a new catering complex was built some 125 feet long N-S by 60 feet E-W. This consisted of a large Brew House with a courtyard to its east, mostly situated over the site of the former Great Kitchen, next to this was a Larder for the storage of foodstuffs, beyond this was a Bake House with a little Kitchen attached, beyond which was a Buttery and little Hall. A 12 foot high stone wall ran from the west side of the porch of the Great Hall to the corner of the little Hall to the north, separating the catering complex from the Outer Court, and allowing the enclosure of a small garden.
