The Canterbury UAD states that it is uncertain when precisely the Eagle Brewery became established. Two brewers are listed at Longport in Pigot's Directory for 1828-29:- Thomas Giles Brewer, Longport; and Thomas Mason Brewer, Longport, however no street numbers are given.

In Pigot's Directory of 1832-34, no breweries are listed in Longport at all. Thus it would appear that the Eagle Brewery was established between 1834 and 1840, because the Eagle Brewery John Saunders Bennett (Brewer) is listed at 25 Longport in Pigot's Directory of 1840.

The brewery is clearly marked on the 1st edition O. S. map of 1874 and is shown as a long rectangular complex set at right angles to the street frontage. The Canterbury Directory for 1878 lists Henry Holden, Eagle Brewery, 25 Longport and the same is recorded in Steven's Directory for 1882.

The brewery closed down sometime after this date and before 1899 as no brewery is listed in Longport in Kelly's Directory for 1899.
