The site of the Jolly Gardener is tricky to locate exactly. War damage and subsequent renumbering of the area makes it difficult. The inn was destroyed in 1942 by enemy action but stood on the junction of Kingsmead Road and Sturry Road.
The Jolly Gardener was formally The Queen's Arms and Fremlins were the brewers. William Cullen is shown as the innkeeper of Queen's Arms in 1846 and in 1847 he was listed as keeper of a beer house on the same site.
