[TR 04205540] Shottenden Mill [NAT]. (1)

Crawford noted that the windmill had vanished when he visited the site. (2)

Shottenden Mill is not mentioned in "Windmills of Kent", 1979, by J. West. (3)

A windmill standing on Shottenden Hill was formerly a well-known landmark. (4-6)

The mill is shown on the Ordnance Survey drawing of 1789 and appears to have been used for surveying at this time. The mill is last marked on OS mapping in the early 20th century when it is noted as being disused.

Excavations were carried out in 2009 and 2011-12 as part of the Perry Wood Archaeology Project. Trenches were dug across the windmill mound. Pottery dating to the 17th to 19th century was found. Iron fittings were found, probably derived from the 1920s demolition of the windmill. (7-8)
