Summary

Two round barrows were located near Kingsgate, at a site known as Hackendown Banks. These monuments were investigated in 1743 and 1865. Finds reported at the time included several crouched burials with urns in cists in the first investigation. A tower was built on the larger of the two barrows which is still visible as a mound; there is no trace of the other.

[TR 3954 7028] Hackemdown Banks Tower (on site of) Tumulus [NR] (1) Two round barrows at Kingsgate, known as Hackendown Banks, were opened in 1743 and 1865 respectively. Several crouched burials with urns in cists were found in the first one opened. A monument was built on the larger of the two barrows. (2)(3) The barrow surmounted by Hackendown Banks Tower is still recognisable as a strong swelling; there is no trace of the other.
