During excavations undertaken by Wessex archaeology ahead of development at Springhead, An isolated pit was uncovered. It has been identified as being of an early medieval date due to the presence of typically Anglo-Saxon plant remains. It was located 40m to the south of the southern edge of a large Saxon cemetery. It was sub-rectangular with steep sides and a flat base, measuring 1.8m by 1.25m in width and 0.88m in depth. A burnt dump located at the base of the pit contained a large quantity of diagnostically Saxon charred plant remains, particularly free threshing wheat, as well as barley and stinking mayweed. (1)
