[TR 38586468] Roman Coins found [NAT] (1) Excavations at Ramsgate for a new slipway in the harbour uncovered medieval coins at a depth of 7-8 feet, large fints and bricks (presumed to be Roman) at 11-12 feet and at 16-20 feet piles of wood of the ancient pier sunk in solid chalk and among them Roman coins, in small brass, of the Constantine family. (2,3) The oldest slipway (No 1) is centred at TR 3858 6468 but its exact date is not known. (4) TR 385647 (Sited to nearest 50 m) Romano-British remains, site no 184. (5) TR 385646. In 1838 during excavations for the installation of a new slipway in the outer basin evidence of Romano-British and medieval occupation was discovered. At a depth of 7-8 feet medieval coins were found. At 11-12 feet some large flints and bricks considered to be of Roman origins were discovered, possibly showing the presence of buildings. At the lowest level 16-20 feet, wooden piles sunk into the chalk bed indicating an ancient pier or wharf were seen. Among the piles were some Roman brass coins. It is conjectured that the port was used for trade during both the Romano-British and medieval periods. (6) Additonal reference (7)
